The first mainline Dragon Ball Z Budokai Tenkaichi game since 2007’s Budokai Tenkaichi 3 is in the works with a new Dragon Ball Z Budokai Tenkaichi game from Toei Animation and Bandai Namco, announced over the weekend. Despite not being officially titled Budokai Tenkaichi 4, this is the name most fans are referring to it with.

While the trailer does not reveal much, it confirms that the new game will take us into Dragon Ball Super territory. The previous games only covered Dragon Ball Z, and some of them included GT-related content. This new game confirms more recent story content, as Goku activates his Super Saiyan God mode in the trailer.

In the past, the Budokai Tenkaichi series had dominated Dragon Ball Z video games, but there hasn’t been a new entry since Ultimate Tenkaichi in 2011. It has been argued that Budokai Tenkaichi 3 was the last true game in the series, since Ultimate Tenkaichi was released as part of the Raging Blast series in Japan. A marketing change led to the name change in the West.

There was a long story campaign in the Budokai Tenkaichi games that included all the major events from the Dragon Ball Z anime as well as additional content from the original Dragon Ball, the DBZ movies, and Dragon Ball GT. In addition, these games featured a large number of characters.

Game development is in its early stages, so there is no release date yet.
