Major brands under fire for lagging on cage-free commitments

Update 11/11/24: Colombina has officially reinstated its global cage-free commitment and is now reporting 40% across all brands. They have also refreshed their commitment and pledge to be globally cage-free by 2027. Colombina uses 13,464,000 eggs per year, meaning that a fulfilled cage-free commitment would affect the lives of nearly 48,000 hens.

Animal Equality has teamed up with the Open Wing Alliance (OWA) for a global campaign, exposing four major brands for lagging on their cage-free commitments.

Despite pledging to eliminate cages, Colombina, Lai Sun Dining, Norwegian Cruise Line, and Wagamama still allow hens to suffer in cramped conditions.

OWA–a global coalition dedicated to ending the abuse of hens– released a report in September called Fair and Fowl: Global Companies Edition. The report reveals which companies are failing to report on their cage-free promises. It calls on these brands to publicly share their progress, as companies like Pizza Express and Royal Caribbean have already done.

The U.S. campaign is focusing on Norwegian Cruise Line, the largest and most recognizable of the four. By taking action now, you can help hold them accountable for their broken promises for hens.
