Biography
Hunt was born in Heber Springs, Arkansas. As a child, Hunt lived through the Great Depression. As a young adult, he worked at his uncle’s sawmill and then chose to join the US Army.
From there, he helped serve as an auctioneer, truck driver, and lumber salesman before launching a rice hull business with his wife Johnelle. Initially, the company was not successful, losing him over $19,000.
He ran a trucking company for decades. In 1969, he started trucking again with five tractors and seven trailers that he had purchased.
Hunt was known to be a generous person. He distributed $100 bills in his money clip and was also known for coveting a trinket given away to all who needed it.

John Hunt led a fascinating and exemplary career in American business. After stepping down as president in 1982, he began to withdraw from the business but remained a fixture in the organization and served as board chairman until 1995.
Hunt retired from the company on December 31, 2004, but continued to be its biggest shareholder. Even after his retirement, he still visited the company’s headquarters in Lowell. In spite of his retirement, it was not unusual for him to visit employees at the company.
