As a teenager, Chance the Rapper knew he wanted to work in music. He recorded his first mixtape, 10 Day, while still in high school. It earned him some attention in the underground hip-hop scene when it was released in 2012. On “They Don’t Like Me,” Chance appeared on Childish Gambino’s sixth mixtape Royalty in the same year, further increasing his popularity.
A mixtape titled Acid Rap, released in 2013, earned him mainstream recognition. With this album, he reached No. 63 on the Billboard Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums chart and made XXL’s 2014 Freshman Class List without the backing of a major label. Rolling Stone named it No. 26 on its 2013 best albums list.
In 2016, the rapper’s mixtape Coloring Book won the Grammy for Best Rap Album, further cementing his status as a major rap player.
