Barcelona are flying high right now, following their Spanish Super Cup triumph. On the other hand, there seem to be huge concerns amongst the Real Madrid fans, as the club have severely underperformed in recent times. Carlo Ancelotti’s team had started the campaign in world-class form but have looked a shell of themselves since before the World Cup break.
The hope was that things would improve after the World Cup and the players would be rejuvenated following the tournament. The reality has been very different, as the performances have been sluggish and the results not much better. There has not been one convincing victory since the one over Celtic in early November.
On the other hand, Barcelona have clinched the Spanish Super Cup and are leading the La Liga title race by three points as well. Thus, Robert Lewandowski must be happy with the move that he made in the summer. Yet, it does not look like it was his first choice.
As reported by Relevo, when his agent had begun to contact different clubs, letting them know that the then Bayern Munich star was considering changing teams, the first of those calls was made to Real Madrid. The player prioritized reaching the team. But Los Blancos ruled out the signing. Lewandowski was already 33 years of age and Karim Benzema was having the best season of his career.
It is safe to say that Barcelona took advantage of the situation and made Lewandowski the superstar signing of the summer, a profile of player that they were missing since the departure of Lionel Messi.
His arrival has certainly had a positive impact on Xavi’s side. On the other hand, Real Madrid are going through a tough phase right now, that they need to get out of as soon as possible.
Their loss in the Spanish Super Cup final against Barcelona means that their upcoming Copa del Rey Round of 16 game against Villarreal is almost a can’t lose fixture now. Worryingly, Real Madrid did lose at the hands of the Yellow Submarine very recently.
One can only hope that the defeat in the final will act as a wake up call for Ancelotti’s side and help them get back to their best.
