Asus ROG Strix GL753 Review

asus rog gl753 review

If you don’t have time for a high-end PC gaming experience, this laptop may have your name on it. The Asus ROG Strix GL753 fits in the budget with a vivid display and comfortable keyboard but is limited by intensive titles.

The Asus ROG Strix GL753 is a great performance laptop with a GTX 1050 Ti graphics card and RGB backlit keyboard. It has a lot of potentials, but other laptops on the market are bringing similar specifications for less money.

If you’re looking for a gaming PC but are on a tight budget, you can find one that’s capable of playing most games.

Design

ASUS decided on making a laptop for a particular budget range by putting all the premium features of its higher-end machines into the cheaper devices. The result is not as sleek, but more garish than before. The company’s logo is shaped like a racing car driven by one of its mascots, the Strix. They used orange paint to adorn the top of its lid.

The 17.3-inch 1080p display with an island-style keyboard to accommodate a number pad is available in the new ASUS ROG gaming laptop. There are some orange accents on the front-facing speakers and the front of the laptop has a bit of neon color.

The Strix is lighter than the Alienware 17 R3 and MSI GS63VR 6RF Stealth Pro, a 17-inch gaming notebook. The Strix weighs in at about six pounds and measures 16.3 x 10.7 x 1.3 inches. While the Alienware 17 R3 weighs 8.3 pounds and is 16.9 x 11.5 x 1.3 inches, the MSI GS63VR 6RF Stealth Pro weighs only 4.2 pounds with a slim body measuring 14.9 x 9.8 x 0.7 inches in size.

The ports are located on the side of the monitor that is easy to access. The monitor offers HDMI and Mini Display Port inputs for connecting multiple displays, as well as USB 3.0 and USB-C ports for powering and charging devices. This laptop features a Blu-ray Drive, USB 3.0 port, and another USB 2.0 port. An SD card reader is also located just beneath the palm rest.

Display

The Strix is not as bright as the competition, but it has a 17.3-inch, matte 1080p display which helps bring stunning details to life. It also has a sharper image that made sense of the latest Power Rangers trailer. Elizabeth Banks’ Rita Repulsa costume was emerald green and popped against the street. I saw the trailer from the far side of my laptop, even with its 178-degree viewing angles.

Everything looked fine but it was hard to see Batman in the dark when I wasn’t looking straight at the screen. Even though the monitor doesn’t support Nvidia’s G-Sync, none of my other problems with tearing on the screen occurred.

The screen reproduces 124 percent of the sRGB color gamut, though it falls just short of the average desktop replacement and far below the Alienware 17’s, it is better than the Stealth Pro. The colors on the Asus Strix gaming laptop aren’t very precise.

Strix’s display measured at 285 nits, which is a little brighter than average and below the 295-nit average brightness but still a comfortable amount for most people to see. It was about on par with Alienware and slightly brighter than MSI’s new GS65 Stealth-006. Despite the fact that the screen is not dark, I find the screen to be bright enough for both casual use and gaming.

Speakers

The speakers on the Strix GL753 were powerful. When I listened to Tegan and Sara’s “Closer,” the sound immediately filled our small conference room with a blast of synths and vocals that were accompanied by drums. People can experience Dolby-powered AudioWizard. Just switch to the Action preset, and they’ll hear more percussion and cymbals.

With the speakers firing missiles, the Batmobile could not be outdone. The background music on Batman: Arkham Knight, however, was hard to hear. Switching to action mode balanced out the soundscape.

Keyboard and Touchpad

The Strix Keyboard provides a comfortable typing experience. I never felt like my fingers were almost touching the bottom of the keyboard, which is common with other keyboards that don’t offer 2.1 millimeters of key travel.

On the 10fastfingers.com typing test, I typed at a speedy 115 words per minute, exceeding my average of 107 wpm. The issue I had was that the keys popped up a bit too slowly for how fast I needed to react when gaming, which made it tougher than it should be. The Asus ROG laptop features an RGB-backlit keyboard that allows the user to cycle through different colors and create a customized look.

The ASUS ROG is a keyboard with RGB lighting, but you won’t be able to create unlimited color combinations because the software is only capable of limited color options.

The gaming mouse is designed primarily for first-person shooter games. The 4.1 x 2.8-inch touchpad is a bit finicky and I had to perform gestures like swiping three fingers up to view all of my open programs in order to be accurate. It was particularly difficult to right-click on the bottom of the trackpad as I had to use the very bottom of it.

Performance

With a 2.8-GHz Intel Core i7-7700HQ CPU, the Strix is among the first gaming notebook with a “Kaby Lake” processor and 16GB of RAM. It also has 256GB SSD and a 1TB hard drive. I had a very smooth experience playing GTA V on high settings and having Chrome open in 25 tabs.

The Strix Gaming PC notched a score of 13,693 on the Geekbench 3 overall performance test, falling short of the desktop-replacement average (17,478) and the Alienware (Intel Core i7-6820HK, 13,906) but surpassing the Stealth Pro (Core i7-6700HQ, 13,454).

The Strix completed the copy in 23 seconds, clocking in at 221.3 MBps per second. The Stealth Pro and Alienware are also slower, with rates of 560.8 MBps and 509 MBps respectively.

Battery Life

The ROG Strix lasted for 5 hours and 25 minutes on the Laptop Mag Battery Test, which involved continuous web browsing over Wi-Fi. That’s about 1 hour longer than the average (4:23) and far better than the Stealth Pro (2:54). The Alienware, perhaps due to its graphics card from the last generation, lasted the longest at 6:07.

Software and Warranty

Asus has pre-installed its software in order to streamline the user experience for gamers. The ROG gaming center is regularly updated and tells users about their performance and settings. GameFirst IV dynamically prioritizes apps to keep your gaming experience smooth, even when you’re having a lot of network traffic.

It also includes Asus Splendid Utility, which lets you change the color temperature of your display (perfect for late-night gaming), and it has XSplit Gamecaster built in so you can stream straight from your laptop.

However, there is a bit of bloatware. It includes Netflix, Minecraft, Drawboard PDF, Candy Crush Soda Saga, Royal Revolt II, and Twitter.

Final Thoughts

Although it may not be the most fashionable, the ROG StrixGL753 beats many Pascal-bearing laptops. People may still enjoy a fully-featured 1080p gaming machine without having to care about design. The “Strix GL753” does not have a much lower price tag than most other gaming laptops. It offers similar performance for a higher price point.

This is one of the most affordable Pascal laptops. With plenty of storage and connectivity, it is a worthy purchase for many people. Regardless of this, the Editors’ Choice HP Omen 17 has the better build quality and a sleeker design. It’s a little more expensive than the Strix, but it offers configurable options.
