A 15-year-old student shot and killed a teacher and another student at Abundant Life Christian School in Madison on Monday morning, police said. The shooter, identified as Natalie Rupnow, also injured six others before dying from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound when officers arrived at the scene shortly before 11 a.m. Rupnow, who went by the name Samantha, was a student at the school, which serves approximately 390 students from Kindergarten through 12th grade. Authorities are investigating how the teen obtained the handgun used in the shooting and are speaking with her family members. Police said the shooting took place in a classroom during a study hall session. A second-grade student made a 911 call at 10:57 a.m. to report the shooting, according to Madison Police Chief Shon Barnes. “Let that soak in for a minute,” Barnes said of the young caller in a press conference. Two of the six injured victims remain in critical condition, while others are in stable condition or have been discharged from the hospital. The identities of the victims have not been publicly released. By Monday evening, two of the six injured individuals had been discharged from SSM Health St. Mary’s Hospital. Officials reported that two others are in stable condition, while two remain in critical condition with life-threatening injuries. The school has security cameras and faculty and students are trained in lockdown procedures, which were put into place during the incident. However, the school does not have metal detectors or a school resource officer. Police confirmed that they were conducting a search at the shooter’s home on Madison’s north side.
