And on this week’s episode of the Magical Rewind podcast, Matthew reflected on the experience — including a run-in he and Gabrielle had on set.
According to Matthew, the moment happened when Gabrielle approached him to practice lines. He said, “There was this one moment where — and, again, I’m oblivious, I had no idea — and she wanted to rehearse. And I was like, ‘No, I’m good.'”
Matthew shared that, at that time, he wasn’t a fan of rehearsing lines as he preferred to let moments happen authentically.
“Now I can do whatever, and nothing’s gonna faze me,” he said, “[but] at that point in my mind, I really loved memorizing the lines, knowing all the beats, but hated running it, ’cause it felt like it took all the freshness out of it.”
So “I was like, ‘They’re gonna give us multiple takes, let’s just keep it fresh,'” Matthew continued. “And she got angry and went and reported me to the director and the studio.”
Matthew said he was especially shocked to be reported for his behavior, given his history as an advocate and a general good guy. “Usually I’m, like, the advocate, and I’m fighting for kids and, like, you know, women’s rights,” he said. “This is the only time in my life when I was called into the office for something I did on set. And I had no clue.”
And although he meant well and producers also understood his stance, Matthew was left feeling really “embarrassed” by the experience.
