Iceland Volcano Erupting Captured From Plane Window by Passenger

One plane passenger’s rare view from her window seat has wowed internet viewers, showing a natural phenomenon from an angle that people rarely get to see with their own eyes.

The X user @PatterKayleigh captured footage of a volcanic eruption as she flew over Reykjanes in Iceland. She filmed the clip from her window seat by the window of an EasyJet plane. “My life has peaked. Nothing is ever topping this,” the poster wrote in the caption of the video, which has amazed other X users. Newsweek has contacted @PatterKayleigh via X for comment.

Iceland is located between the North Atlantic and Arctic Oceans and is considered to be part of Europe, with its closest neighbor being Greenland. The country is popular with tourists from around the world who want to visit its unique natural features, such as its volcanic mountains, of which there are 130 around the island.

The number of international tourists visiting Iceland reached a record high in 2018 with over 2 million people traveling to the country from abroad, according to Statista, with the largest number being from the United States. In 2022, almost 300,000 international tourists visited the Nordic country.

The short clip shows the X user’s view from her window seat, showing the wing of the plane as it passes by the fiery eruption. The volcano can be seen leaking a huge amount of lava as smoke bellows upward into the sky.

The eruption’s lava flow is the farthest west, the Icelandic Met Office has observed. Local news outlets said the lava has consumed a service building for coach drivers near the Blue Lagoon on Thursday.

The seismic activity and deformation at the site remain minimal as of Thursday, the Icelandic Met Office has said as its experts observe the situation.

The video of the eruption amazed other internet users, with many replying to the post. “That is straight up WILD!” posted Danny Griffin.

“That’s unreal,” Con commented, while @esrcee wrote: “That looks amazing, what a sight.”

User @thedudetalks80 shared: “Wow, that’s incredible! You’re so lucky to have witnessed such a powerful natural event. A once-in-a-lifetime experience for sure.”

“Amazing sight its truly a wonder of nature. I was lucky enough to see Stromboli erupt from close due to being moored on a yacht in front of it. A memory that will last forever as will yours,” said @MaltaGooner.

“I’d hate to be sitting on the other side,” @WHU_Len wrote, while @pipsy80 commented: “Wow, that’s incredible. Thanks for sharing. Nature is truly stunning.”
