San Francisco 49ers quarterback Brock Purdy left the team’s 40-34 Monday Night Football loss to the Detroit Lions after suffering an apparent arm injury late in the fourth quarter.
With the 49ers down 12 points and less than two minutes to go, Purdy was sacked by Lions safety Brian Branch. Purdy appeared to fall on his wrist, and went to the sideline to be looked at. The ESPN telecast showed Purdy attempting to throw the ball, and then shaking his head making it clear he couldn’t go back into the game.
After the game, 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan provided an update on his quarterback.
Shanahan said Purdy is dealing with a right elbow injury. He said he thinks a nerve struck in the elbow and Purdy lost feeling in his arm. This is the same elbow in which he suffered a major injury two years ago in the NFC Championship Game against the Philadelphia Eagles. Purdy had to undergo Tommy John Surgery to fix it.
Purdy’s status for Week 18 is currently to be determined, but with the 49ers well out of playoff contention, it’s likely he’s played his last down of the 2024 season.
Despite Monday night being a meaningless game for the 49ers, Purdy showed out. He completed 27-of-35 passes for 377 yards with three touchdowns and two interceptions. He was in the middle of another scoring drive when he suffered the injury.
If Purdy’s season is, in fact, over, he finishes the year with 3,864 passing yards, 20 touchdowns, and 12 interceptions. It was a down year for Purdy, as he threw for 4,280 yards with 31 touchdowns and 11 interceptions in 2023. He made the Pro Bowl and finished fourth in MVP voting last season.
Purdy is eligible for massive contract extension next week. He was set to reset the market heading into the year, but following a bit of a down season, it’s possible he doesn’t get a contract upwards of $60 million per season. There’s also a chance this injury shakes things up.
Purdy became the third quarterback in NFL history to get Tommy John surgery with the internal brace repair when he underwent the procedure in March 2023. By the end of July 2023, he was already back at practice at training camp. He didn’t miss any regular season action.
The 49ers will hope Purdy’s injury isn’t too severe this time around. However, he’ll undergo more tests in the coming days and potentially weeks as the 49ers figure out what to do with their franchise quarterback.
