Early Life
Fernando Poe Jr. was born on August 20, 1939, in the Philippines. Poe finished his primary education at San Beda College, Lepanto. He attended high school at San Sebastian College where he was able to study theater arts.
After his father died from rabies at age 35, Poe had to support his family. He dropped out of school to become a breadwinner for a family of five.
Poe came from a family with six siblings and his full name was derived from that of brother Andy Poe, whose father was an extremely popular actor.
Poe is a famous action film star, earning himself the nickname Da King. He has won the Filipino Academy of Movie Arts and Sciences Awards for Best Actor in movies such as Mga Alabok ng Lupa and Asedillo. Astrologers say that Fernando Poe Jr.’s zodiac sign is Leo.
Personal Life
Poe married actress Susan Roces in a civil ceremony in 1968. The couple later had a religious ceremony as well and among the major sponsors was then-President Ferdinand Marcos. Poe and Roces adopted a daughter, Grace Poe, who became a senator. Poe was also partnered with Anna Marin and had one son, Ronan, and with former actress Rowena Moran and had a daughter, Lourdes Virginia.
Career
Poe dropped out of high school when he was 14 years old to work as a stuntman in the Philippine film industry. He made his first starring role in the movie Anak ni Palaris (Son of Palaris) at age 14 and was given starring roles in subsequent films. The movie was not as popular as they expected. In 1957 the movie Lo Waist Gang made him popular, and the film was such a big hit that low-waist pants became a fad.
Poe, also known as FPJ from his initials, starred in multiple movies which depicted him as a champion for the poor and downtrodden. He made nine films under the pseudonym Ronwaldo Reyes. His surname came from his grandmother Martha.
In the 1960s, he created FPJ Productions and later testified before the Senate against criminals who forced film producers to pay them to keep them from performing their illegal activities. He starred in the 1965 film The Ravagers. The film depicts the U.S. and the Philippines working together against Japanese wartime occupation. It is considered one of the most influential Filipino films ever made.”
Poe won the best actor award at the FAMAS. Movies that were awarded were Mga Alabok ng Lupa (1967), Asedillo (1971), Durugin si Totoy Bato, Umpisahan Mo, Tatapusin Ko (1983), and Muslim Magnum .357 (1987). His roles include Flavio in the mythical Ang Panday series, Kahit Konting Pagtingin, Dito sa Pitong Gatang, and Aguila. His last movie was Pakners with Efren “Bata” Reyes.
After that Fernando Poe Jr. was the Presidential Candidate for the Koalisyon ng Nagkakaisang Pilipino (KNP) in 2004. He accepted the nomination in December 2003 and was going to be the opposition candidate in the Philippines’ 2004 presidential election.
Death and Legacy
Poe was admitted to St. Luke’s Medical Center, Quezon City, on the evening of December 11, 2004, after he complained of feeling dizzy at a Christmas party in his production studio. He had a brain clot and suffered from severe reactions when being treated for it. He died at the age of 65 without regaining consciousness on December 14.
The organizers of the nine-day wake claimed that as many as two million people attended. The procession through Manila was reminiscent of the 1983 funeral procession for Ninoy Aquino and the 1985 funeral procession for Julie Vega. He was buried in Manila North Cemetery. His family plot is there along with his father and mother. On December 14, 2012, eight years after his death, a monument to Poe was erected at the corner of Roxas Boulevard and Arquiza Street. His widow Susan Roces and daughter Grace Poe were in attendance.
Net Worth
It is estimated that Fernando Poe Jr.’s net worth is between $1 million and $5 million. His primary career as a movie actor has brought him this much wealth. The money he pulled in from his profession was real–enough to rank as one of the biggest celebrity cashouts of all time.
