Russian Drone Hits Steel Shelter Covering Chernobyl Reactor, Zelensky Says

A Russian drone hit the steel shelter covering part of the Chernobyl nuclear plant on the morning of Friday, February 14, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said.

Zelensky said that a “high-explosive warhead” hit the shelter covering Chernobyl Reactor 4, causing a fire to break out which had since been extinguished.

“At present, the radiation background has not increased, and this is constantly monitored. According to initial estimates, the damage to the shelter is significant,” Zelensky said.

The International Atomic Energy Agency, an organisation within the UN promoting safe use of nuclear energy, confirmed that an explosion occurred on the roof of the shelter.

Russia had not commented on the incident at the time of writing.
