Disney World Power Outage Shuts Down Rides: What to Know

A power outage at the Walt Disney World Resort in Bay Lake, Florida, left multiple rides closed on Monday night.

Newsweek has contacted Walt Disney Parks for comment via email.

Why It Matters

Disney World in Florida is a major tourist destination. Nationwide, the parks have seen multiple power outages in the past that have caused rides to temporarily shut down.

Previous power outages have been caused by extreme weather. In October 2024, Hurricane Milton shut down multiple attractions at Disney World in Florida for two days after millions were left without power in the state.

However, power outages remain rare at Disney World.

“Disney World is built with multiple system redundancies to handle the strain of tens of millions of visitors a year in the lightning capital of the world [central Florida],” Robert Niles, the editor of ThemeParkInsider.com, told Fox News in August 2020.

He added that Disney generates an enormous amount of power with its own solar facilities and has backup sources on site.

What To Know

According to WDW News, which provides updates about Disney parks across the country, nearly every attraction at the Magic Kingdom theme park at the Disney World Resort in Bay Lake was shut down on Monday night due to a reported power outage.

Only a handful of attractions, including the Monsters Inc. Laugh Floor, Tomorrowland Transit Authority PeopleMover, Haunted Mansion, the Mickey meet and greet, Princess Fairytale Hall meet and greets, Buzz Lightyear’s Space Ranger Spin, Jungle Cruise, and TRON Lightcycle / Run, were unaffected by the outage.

Every attraction in Frontierland in the Magic Kingdom theme park was also closed, as well as every ride in Fantasyland, WDW News reported.

Amid the outage, the Orlando Amusement account on X said it was “madness” at Disney World in Bay Lake, citing cast members inside the park.

“Power failure reported at Magic Kingdom at Walt Disney World. Most attractions are CLOSED. We’re in the park right now and it’s MADNESS!” they wrote.

They added that six attractions were operating via generators. Meanwhile, cast members were reportedly not letting guests join the queues of closed attractions, but guests who were in line when the attraction shut down were allowed to stay until it reopened.

The exact reason for the outage is still unclear. It reportedly caused wait times for open rides to increase, with the My Disney Experience showing that the TRON Lightcycle / Run had a wait time of 110 minutes at around 7 p.m. The Monsters Inc. Laugh Floor attraction had the shortest wait time of 10 minutes.
