What Will Happen to Monty in ‘Landman’? Jon Hamm ‘Hoping’ for Season 2

While viewers are uncertain as to whether Jon Hamm’s character survives in Landman, the actor has said he is “hoping” for a second season.

Landman is the latest Taylor Sheridan-produced TV drama, following his other hit shows such as Yellowstone, 1923, Lioness and Mayor of Kingstown. The show is set in the oil fields of western Texas and is based on the documentary podcast Boomtown, which told the story of the West Texan oil boom.

It stars Billy Bob Thornton as Tommy Norris, an oil crisis executive who tries to take his company to the top during an oil boom. He stars alongside Demi Moore as Cami Miller, Ali Larter as Angela Norris, Jon Hamm playing Monty Miller and Michelle Randolph as Ainsley Norris.

A titan of the Texas oil industry, Monty is the president of M-Tex and one of the most important characters in the hit series. However, one of the key stories in Landman Episode 9 is Monty’s worsening health following a heart attack, with the series hinting that Monty might eventually die.

Newsweek emailed spokespeople for Hamm and Sheridan for comment on Thursday.

What Happened to Monty in ‘Landman’ Episode 9?

By the end of Landman Season 1, Episode 9, Monty’s fate appeared grim due to his ongoing heart issues. The episode, titled “Wolfcamp,” showed Monty grappling with the physical toll of running a multibillion-dollar oil company, even as he attempted to implement major changes to ease his burden.

Monty made several significant moves, naming Tommy as the new vice president of operations for M-Tex and offering Rebecca (Kayla Wallace) the position of vice president of exploration. He also announced plans to step back from his leadership role to spend more time with Cami and his family. However, these efforts to reduce his stress may have come too late.

As the episode progressed, Monty’s health visibly deteriorated. His heart rate spiked dangerously, and he appeared physically distressed just before the screen cut away, leaving viewers on edge about his fate. Monty had previously referred to his heart as “busted, rotten,” and the show hinted that the constant stress of his high-pressure career could have triggered yet another heart attack—this time possibly fatal.

The most telling clue came in the episode’s final moments when Tommy received a phone call from Cami. Although the exact details of their conversation weren’t revealed, Tommy’s somber reaction—”I’m sorry to hear that. What can I do? Is there any way I can help?”—strongly suggested tragic news.

Despite the heavy implications, Landman left the door slightly open for ambiguity. Monty’s death wasn’t shown explicitly, leaving room for a possible survival twist in the season finale.

Will There Be a ‘Landman’ Season 2?

When Hamm appeared on CNN’s New Year’s Eve special, host Andy Cohen asked if Landman would be renewed for a second season.

“I’m hoping. Stay tuned. That’s all I can say,” the actor responded.

Hamm isn’t the only star of the show to share their hopes that the show won’t be canceled. Randolph, one of the show’s breakout stars, previously spoke to Newsweek about the possibility of Landman returning for a highly anticipated sophomore run.

“I think there’s so much more of the story to tell, so if we get to do a Season 2, I know that for a fact that everyone would be overjoyed to do that,” she said. “I don’t think anyone wants to stop telling the story.”

Randolph also gave Newsweek a hint of what is to come at the end of the first season.

“The stakes just get higher and higher, and we become more emotionally invested into the characters and the story. I think everything just becomes more concrete and the family dynamic is really strong…It’s a great season,” she said.

While Season 2 has yet to be publicly announced, Moore told Deadline in May 2024 that she is “excited for us to start the second which will be at the beginning of next year.” While this might indicate that filming for the second season will soon be underway, this hasn’t officially been confirmed.

There is one episode left in Landman‘s debut season. Titled “The Crumbs of Hope,” it will air on Sunday, January 12.
